Mentoring for Organizations

The Community Foundation for Monterey County’s Center for Nonprofit Excellence has provided mentor-assisted technical assistance and capacity building support for several cohorts of small organizations over the last several years. To help build future mentor/consulting capacity and contribute to the field, we documented the methods and resources used.

On this site, you’ll find a Mentor Handbook for developing your own program and for training new mentors.

Handbook

The Handbook describes our approach to mentoring for small organizations. It is based on our experience with several cohorts of Community Foundation for Monterey County grantees participating in capacity building programs over the last few years, including the Community Leadership Project and Next Steps for Small Nonprofits. Our hope is that you find it useful as you design your own program or services.

You can download the entire Handbook as a PDF or read it online. We recommend reading in chapter order, but feel free to skip around!

Tools and Resources

We are also including on this site the main tools and resources used and/or created by the mentors in their work with participating organizations.

We’ve also provided a Toolbox featuring resources used by our mentors. These resources can be used by other mentors as well as by organizations for their own capacity building.

Toolbox

The toolbox contains a sampling of tools and resources that were created, adapted, or used by the consultants who designed and implemented the mentoring for organizations programs. Tools can be a variety of resources that mentors either create or bring to the attention of the organization’s leaders to support their identified capacity building needs. They may include trainings and conferences, webinars, books, articles, websites, templates, assessments, questionnaires, checklists, guidelines, sample plans, policies, sample bylaws, job descriptions, among many others. Developing, identifying, and recommending tools requires careful examination of their suitability and relevance for the organization and the purpose for which it will be used. Our criteria for selecting tools include those that are:

Consultants and other technical assistance providers can be excellent resources for building organizational capacity. Time and financial resources are often limited, so selecting the right consultant is essential.

Process for Engaging Consultants

For many small or emerging organizations, working with a consultant will be a new experience. The mentor can play a critical role in facilitating a successful engagement. The mentor is often a bridge and translator of the organization’s needs and the consultant’s offerings. Guiding the organization in the process of selecting, engaging and working with a consultant or technical assistance provider is an important step in building the organization’s ability to use these resources and in developing self-reliance. In selecting and engaging a consultant, a mentor can help:
