Ways to Give

There are several ways you can make a gift to the Community Foundation for Monterey County. You can support any of our charitable funds with a credit card via our secure donation portial. Simply enter the fund name of your choice.

Please include the name of the charitable fund you wish to support in the memo line.

Credit Card

You can donate securely online to search for the fund you’d like to support and make a credit card gift. You will immediately receive a tax receipt for the amount of your gift via email.

Appreciated Stock/Securities

A tax smart way to give

Gifts of appreciated securities often allow you to make a substantial contribution while receiving valuable income tax advantages. Generally, a donor may qualify for a charitable deduction based on the value of the gift, and the capital gains from the donated asset passes tax-free to the Community Foundation for Monterey County.

To transfer appreciated stock to a charitable fund, please contact our Philanthropic Services Team for instructions and to indicate which fund you would like to support.

Real Estate

Gifts of commercial or residential real estate often allow you to make a substantial contribution while receiving valuable income tax advantages. Generally, a donor may qualify for a charitable deduction based on the value of the gift, and the capital gains from the donated asset passes tax-free to the Community Foundation for Monterey County. IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

Contributing from your IRA to a fund at the Community Foundation for Monterey County is an easy way to reduce your tax burden and make a significant gift to support causes you care about.

In retirement the IRS requires you to withdraw a certain amount (a required minimum distribution or RMD) from your IRA each year, whether you need the funds or not, and you pay income tax on every distribution you take. You can utilize part of your RMD to direct a gift to benefit the causes of your choice or create a charitable fund.

How it Works
If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can make a gift from your IRA account to the CFMC to benefit your favorite nonprofit(s). Gifts made from your IRA (up to $105,000 per year in 2024)* are not reportable as taxable income and qualify toward your RMD which can lower your income and taxes. If you are married, your spouse can also make a gift of up to $105,000* from his or her IRA, for a total of $210,000.

The CFMC can pass through your IRA QCD to the nonprofits you designate.
Support or create a charitable fund
You can request an IRA QCD to almost any type of fund*, including the Fund for Monterey County, field of interest, designated, agency, and scholarship funds.
Leverage your gift through Monterey County Gives!
You can direct your gift to support one or more participating nonprofits in the Monterey County Gives! year-end campaign from mid-November through December 31 and receive a partial match.
Create a Charitable Gift Annuity
Under a new law effective in 2023, some donors can make an IRA QCD in exchange for a charitable gift annuity and receive fixed income for life. You can exercise this option only once during your lifetime and there is an aggregate limit of $53,000 in 2024 (amount adjusted annually for inflation).

*Beginning in 2024, the tax free amount cap per year is indexed for inflation. Note: Tax-free IRA contributions can be made to Field of Interest, Unrestricted, Designated, special funds (including Monterey County Gives!) or operating funds at the CFMC. Gifts to Donor Advised Funds or private foundations do not qualify for preferential tax treatment. You cannot receive any goods or services in order for an IRA rollover gift to qualify for tax-free treatment.

Make a Gift with a Donor-Advised Fund

The donor-advised fund (DAF) is becoming an increasingly popular way to make a charitable gift. DAFs can provide you with immediate tax benefits while making your charitable giving easier. Here are two simple ways you can make a gift through your DAF:

Make an outright gift by suggesting a grant to Community Foundation for Monterey County.
Designate Community Foundation for Monterey County to receive all or a portion of the fund value upon the termination of the fund.

You can select the option that best suits your philanthropic and financial goals to support the Community Foundation for Monterey County. Just contact your fund administrator to request a distribution or beneficiary form or download the appropriate form(s) from your administrator’s website.

Assets from a Private Foundation

If you have a private foundation and are concerned with succession planning, costs or the administrative burden, you can transfer those assets and create a fund at the Community Foundation for Monterey County. A private foundation may retain its name and fulfill is philanthropic goals with no tax or penalty on the transfer. To learn more, please contact our Philanthropic Services Team.

Bequests, Wills and Trusts

Leave a lasting legacy

You can make a bequest to the Community Foundation for Monterey County through your will or living trust. Donors who leave a charitable bequest may qualify for an estate tax deduction based on the value of the gift. You can state your bequest as a set amount of cash, securities, or other assets, or as the “residue” or a “percentage of the residue” of your estate.

Those who include the Foundation in their estate plans are eligible to join other caring donors as members our Legacy Society. For sample bequest language or to learn more, please contact our Philanthropic Services Team.

Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs)

Giving now and later

With a gift of cash or appreciated securities you can:

Receive a generous income (partially tax-free) for your life; and
Receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction; and
Provide a legacy gift to support your favorite nonprofit9s) upon your passing

Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs)

Income for today, a gift for tomorrow

You may transfer assets (including real estate) to a charitable remainder trust that provides an annual specified distribution percentage to one or more beneficiaries for life or a term of years. The remainder creates a charitable fund (or adds to your charitable fund) at the Community Foundation for Monterey County.

Life Insurance/IRA Beneficiaries

A simple and significant gift

IRA accounts listing the Community Foundation for Monterey County as the beneficiary pass to your charitable fund free of estate and income taxes. You can also name the Community Foundation for Monterey County as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy or transfer the policy irrevocably to the Foundation.
