Monterey County Children’s Fund
The Monterey County Children’s Fund is a new Donor Advised Fund with the Community Foundation for Monterey County. This fund was created to provide grants and resources to nonprofit agencies that offer advocacy, education and services to homeless, foster and at-risk youth. Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of these most vulnerable children, eliminating barriers to success so they can realize a brighter future.

Background
The Monterey County Office of Education reports that, “as of 2022, a reported ten thousand students lack secure housing live in Monterey County– a number expected to increase as the economy softens. Over two thousand are enrolled in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD), or 22% of the district’s school population.”

Students who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence include those who are:
- Living in shared housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship
- Living in cars, parks, RV park, campsite, or similar location
- Living in a hotel or motel
- Living in a homeless shelter or transitional housing
- Living in a residence with inadequate facilities, e.g., no water, no heat, no electricity, no plumbing, or infestation.
- Living in an encampment or on the street
- Living in a shed or unconverted garage
- Migratory children living in the above circumstances
- Unaccompanied minors, i.e, children and youth, not in the physical custody or a parent or court-appointed guardian.1
