Jean Duff was introduced to philanthropy by her late husband, Jim Duff. Jean, a native of England, met and married Jim in Los Angeles, where Jim had a successful business and they developed a habit of regular giving to local nonprofits. They came to Pebble Beach to retire and once they arrived on the Monterey Peninsula, they began supporting local organizations.
I think it’s very important to support local nonprofits, which support our local community. – Jean DuffAfter Jim’s death in 2010, Jean established the Jean and Jim Duff fund, an endowed donor advised fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC), in honor of her late husband. To recognize Jim’s legacy as an avid golfer, Jean also established a golf scholarship in his name. Jean has made gifts in the fields of Children and Youth Development, Health and Human Services, Community Development, Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation and Environment and Animal Welfare.
My giving has grown to new areas of interest and it’s wonderful to see the impact. – Jean DuffHer trust and partnership with the CFMC has grown with the addition of other ways of giving. To expand her giving, she revisited her estate plan and established a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA), an instrument that provides income for life (a portion of which is tax-free). The remainder creates an endowed fund to benefit any nonprofit or cause she chooses. She named a dear friend as beneficiary of the income. Upon her death, the remainder will go to her donor advised fund. Jean gives generously and was named Philanthropist of the Year in 2016 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Monterey Bay. Thanks to the Duff’s generosity, their philanthropic vision will continue to grow for years to come and have a permanent positive impact on Monterey County.
